Apocrypha

PDF Old Testament Apocrypha

The 1611 King James Version contained the so called Apocrypha placed between the Old and New Testaments, after Malachi and before Matthew, not mixed into either canon. The additions to Daniel were not printed inside the book of Daniel, but in the Apocrypha section.
But what are these books?
These are books found in the Old Testament translation in Greek, the Septuagint, but not in the Jewish Canon. Since the early Church used mainly the Greek text of the Old Testament, they were highly respected and often considered as Scripture, but by post-apostolic Christians only.
These books and portions of book were fully translated by the KJV translators, just like the canonical books, yet the Church of England considered them useful for “example of life and instruction of manners,” but not for establishing doctrine (per Article VI of the Thirty-Nine Articles). That is why they were isolated from the rest of the Old Testament text.
The Apocrypha remained in most KJV editions until the late 19th century, when British and American Bible societies began removing them to reduce printing costs and avoid controversy.
